Location
Sunset Peak, Lantau Island

The century-old stone cabins scattered across Sunset Peak silently narrate the unique cultural history of Lantau Mountain Camp. Built in the 1920s, these stone structures showcase pre-war Hong Kong’s “mountain-adaptive construction wisdom” — locally quarried lava stone blocks for camp structures and the sloped roofs ingeniously channel rainwater. All demonstrate how the Camp integrates sensitively into the natural landscape with minimal disturbance. These structures are particularly valuable as the witnesses to Hong Kong’s transformation to a post-war hiking culture. Traces of this history remain in features like kerosene lamp hooks, and marks of later expansions, contribute to a compelling ‘living history’. By adopting architectural and cultural preservation methods, we aim to estabilsh a sustainable model that honors the memory these historical sites carry, while providing a solid foundation for future conservation and management efforts.
